Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij has been sent home from the Dutch camp due to an ankle injury, missing the friendly with Italy.

The centre-back was ruled out of last night’s embarrassing 2-0 defeat in Bulgaria, putting a huge dent in their World Cup qualifying hopes.

It seems the ankle injury is worse than previously thought, as it’s reported De Vrij was sent back to Lazio for tests today.

He will therefore not take part in Tuesday’s friendly against Italy in Amsterdam.

His place should be taken by Lazio teammate Wesley Hoedt, who made his senior international debut in the second half of the Bulgaria game.
