Max Allegri and Zinedine Zidane have never faced each other as Coaches, but they had a fiery clash on the pitch in 1996.

The two faced each other in Serie A in September 1996, with the Frenchman having signed for reigning European champions Juventus that summer.

Allegri, meanwhile, was strutting his stuff in the Perugia midfield in a season in which the Umbrian outfit would eventually be relegated.

Zizou hit the post with a free-kick early on, and slipped in Alen Boksic for a chance the Croatian didn’t convert.

First half goals from Michele Padovano and Alessandro Del Piero had the Bianconeri cruising at half-time, with Marco Negri missing a series of chances.

However, four minutes after the restart Negri did finally manage to score, halving the deficit.

It appeared the match was over after Salvatore Matrecano saw red for a last man foul on Alen Boskic.

Juve were soon down to 10 men themselves though, with Zidane sent-off for a trip on Allegri with 15 minutes to play.

It was the fiery Frenchman’s first red card for the Old Lady, though he’d later be sent off in consecutive Champions League games. Zizou eventually earned 10 red cards in his club career, nine of them straight dismissals. There were also two in the World Cup, as he earned a two-match ban for stamping on a Saudi player in 1998 and ended his career with a head-butt on Marco Materazzi in 2006.

In the end Juve held on for a result, but in the personal battle between Zidane and Allegri, the former came off the worse…
