Although the club has spent big on the transfer market this summer, the most difficult deal was keeping goalkeeper Donnarumma after he had initially rejected a new contract.

“I think he decided to remain because this is the ideal environment at this stage of his career and I believe he can grow even more at Milan. The club did really well to keep hold of him.”

Although over €210m has already been spent on 10 players, the Rossoneri are still searching for a new striker, confirming the options are Andrea Belotti of Torino, Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Fiorentina hitman Nikola Kalinic.

“We are considering the situation, as they are different between themselves, but all players who could very well fit into our idea of football.”

The most surprising transfer of the summer was certainly Bonucci, who left Juventus after seven years in a €42m move that escalated rapidly.

“Let’s just say it was an opportunity on the market,” smiled Montella. “At the start it seemed unrealistic, but the club worked in a wonderful way.

“He will bring us a great deal as a player and in terms of experience, but also setting the example when it comes to hard work. And if he brings those qualities to Milan, he won’t bring them to any other side. We have certainly been reinforced by Bonucci.

“He arrived very competitive, extremely professional and had an excellent initial impact.”

There are multiple reports Bonucci will be handed the captain’s armband, but the Coach is keeping his options open.

“I am thinking about it. I will have a precise pointer from the club. We want to signal the start of a new era, so certainly between captain and vice-captain there will be a new buy in there. Bonucci is a candidate, along with Lucas Biglia.

“I am taking time over it, because I think the choice must be shared with the club, the Coach and the squad. The fans must also feel they are represented in this decision.”
