Both sides lost their opening Audi Cup games yesterday, so faced off for the bronze medal. Carlo Ancelotti opted for many young players, including Milan target Renato Sanches, after a 3-0 defeat to Liverpool, while Maurizio Sarri made numerous changes following a 2-1 loss to Atletico Madrid.

Luigi Sepe needed early saves on Kingsley Coman and Arturo Vidal, while Jose Callejon failed to finish it off when sent clear on goal.

Napoli took the lead when Christian Fruchtl parried a Nikola Maksimovic effort from close range and Kalidou Koulibaly was first to fire in the rebound.

Dries Mertens was denied by Fruchtl one-on-one after a Marek Hamsik assist and Manuel Wintzheimer was incorrectly flagged offside when sent clear.

Sepe seemed lacking in confidence and tended to spill shots, including from Timothy Tillman.

Sarri made several substitutions and one of them, Emanuele Giaccherini, doubled Napoli’s lead with a powerful finish from 12 yards from a smart Callejon pull-back.

Arkadiusz Milik came off the bench and skimmed the woodwork with his free kick, but Napoli again dropped the pace significantly in the final 15 minutes.

The Bundesliga champions have had a disastrous pre-season, losing heavily to Inter, Milan, Liverpool and now Napoli, so Carlo Ancelotti’s men were booed off the pitch.
