Simeone got the equaliser straight after the restart with a right-foot strike that took a deflection to wrong-foot the goalkeeper.

Cesena were pinned back, but held out until forcing extra time at Marassi.

Diego Laxalt took just five minutes to give Genoa the lead for the first time, tapping in at the end of a well-worked team move down the right.

It was a bittersweet evening for the Grifone fans, as both Simeone and Laxalt are expected to leave next week.
