Argentina Coach Jorge Sampaoli explained why he picked Inter hitman Mauro Icardi rather than Gonzalo Higuain of Juventus.

Fans in South America have long been calling for Icardi’s inclusion, but leaving Pipita out entirely as a result was somewhat surprising.

“Icardi is what we need right now,” said Sampaoli in a Press conference.

“We require a striker who attacks the space and is not just a goalscorer. We are seeking alternatives and that is why I brought in Icardi.”

Remarkably, the 24-year-old has only one senior cap for Argentina and that was in 2013.

Icardi has consistently been one of the most prolific players in Italy for years now, scoring 85 goals in 158 Serie A games, along with 25 assists.

He already has four from two rounds this season and is joint Capocannoniere with fellow Argentina Paulo Dybala of Juventus
