Davide Zappacosta insists the 3-0 defeat in Spain “made Italy realise many things” and kept his eyes on the prize of World Cup qualification.

The new Chelsea buy came off the bench and put in a strong performance in tonight’s 1-0 victory over Israel.

“We suffered a bit for this win, as Israel clammed up and we did well to have patience. It’s important to give 110 per cent whether you start or come off the bench, as we are representing Italy,” Zappacosta told Rai Sport.

The former Torino full-back was only added to the Azzurri on Sunday due to Leonardo Spinazzola’s injury.

“I was not there against Spain because the Coach made a choice, that’s fine and the important thing is to be ready when called upon.

“The game in Madrid made us realise many things. We have to be a compact side, fight for every ball and harass every opponent. This sort of match is even more difficult, as the opposition locks down all the spaces and make it hard for you.”

Italy are now one point away from mathematically clinching a World Cup play-off spot, as Albania were held 1-1 by Macedonia.

“The play-offs are closer, but our objective has always been qualification. It doesn’t matter if it happens directly or via the play-offs.”
