Iniesta appeared to throw his future with Barca into doubt on Tuesday night, amidst speculation linking him with Juve, after he seemingly contradicted Josep Maria Bartomeu’s claims that there was an agreement in principle.

“Can I confirm the beginning of a renewal agreement with Bartomeu? No, I can’t. There’s no truth to that,” said the veteran after Spain’s 8-0 thrashing of Liechtenstein.

However, Sport insists his priority “is to renew with the Blaugrana”, explaining there is a “willingness” to strike a deal, despite there “still being discrepancies”.

The Catalan newspaper notes Barca offered the 33-year-old “a lifetime extension several weeks ago”, which gave him the option of staying or leaving at the end of each season.

However, while Iniesta liked the proposal, its terms “were still below” what a player of his calibre warranted.

Nonetheless, Sport assures his contract will not be allowed to expire next summer, although an agreement “is not expected to be imminent.”
