Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis insists Gonzalo Higuain “owes a great deal” to the Partenopei after his move to Juventus.

The striker made the transfer to their bitter rivals last summer after activating the €90m release clause in his contract.

Movie producer De Laurentiis spoke to the Corriere della Sera newspaper at the Venice Film Festival and was asked if he and Higuain had forgiven each other yet.

“I have nothing to be forgiven for,” assured ADL. “Higuain was my intuition. At Real Madrid he was often on the bench and I paid €38m for him.

“He owes Napoli a great deal. It is a city that has this immense need to love, even if it is self-destructive and incapable of seeing the truth.

“For centuries Naples has been undermined, always seeking the fightback tied to something impossible, which becomes possible with football.

“Is this the right year for Napoli? Every year could be.”

De Laurentiis was last week appointed head of the marketing committee for the European Club Association.

“I consider marketing to be the liaison between the product and the audience. A film is created by an industrial process, with hundreds of people working on it. It must respond to the laws of the market place.

“The films I would’ve liked to make would not have been watched by anyone.”
