“I had only one year at Lazio, but I did manage to win the Coppa Italia there, the only trophy I failed to lift with Milan,” Albertini told the Corriere della Sera newspaper.

“That whole season was strange. During the campaign, they asked us to transform part of our salary into club shares. I preferred to just terminate the contract and sign a new one with vastly reduced wages. I told them that I didn’t mind giving them a hand.

“As soon as the season ended, everyone made a run for it. Bankruptcy was close and nobody wanted to stay. At the first day of pre-season training, there were five of us in the locker room, plus youth team Coach Mimmo Caso. I decided at that point to leave as well.

“I had already gone by the time Claudio Lotito took over. In his eyes, Lazio is a business and is run like a business, both good and bad. I have to say, he has also won, so the Lazio project is working, even if the rapport with fans and players can be tense.

“Milan’s transfer campaign was a surprise for everyone. The first buys were the most difficult, but we must consider that there hasn’t been much money spent yet: the payments are largely postponed.

“It’s premature to judge the financial consistency of Milan: time will tell. I am neither optimistic nor pessimistic. For now, as a fan, I am happy with the team.”

Albertini spent years at San Siro and was in the running to be President of the FIGC, so why doesn’t he have a role at the new Milan?

“Because nobody ever called me, even if there were many rumours.

“Milan can win the Scudetto and they absolutely must target victory after their transfer campaign. They cannot afford to hold back. It’s just like when Silvio Berlusconi arrived: he won the Scudetto straight away.

“Lazio are one of six teams fighting for four Champions League spots. Simone Inzaghi is capable of getting in there with Juventus, Napoli, Roma, Milan and Inter.”
