“It is our seventh official game of the season and all of them have been tough,” assured the Coach in his Press conference when asked if this was the first genuine test for his side.

“We have a totally new squad and there are players who have barely trained together, so naturally it will take a while to find our form.

“We’ve lost Andrea Conti and Gustavo Gomez also got an injury on international duty. We have great ambition and expectations around us, so far we’ve given the right response, but the truth is even we don’t know what our genuine ambitions are. We are a team in progress and tomorrow’s game won’t be decisive for our season, no matter what the result.”

While Milan started their season early to play the Europa League preliminary rounds, Lazio beat Juventus 3-2 for the Italian Super Cup.

“Lazio are extremely experienced and pragmatic, achieving great results so far,” continued Montella. “They know how to play both if they are in control of possession and if they are defending. We must know how to deal with them in either situation.

“Simone Inzaghi is proving himself to be very pragmatic, can adjust to his players’ characteristics and wins them over in the locker room too. I will admit, when we’ve crossed paths before, I’ve been pretty lucky.”

It’s going to be a frosty reception at the Stadio Olimpico for ex-Lazio midfielder Biglia.

“We expect a great deal from him, as he is a player with such intelligence. He has barely trained with the rest of the side and we are trying to introduce him gradually.

“Biglia will play and I am convinced he’ll give us a big hand. It’s not going to be a normal game for him, but I am convinced he’ll have a great performance.

“Hakan Calhanoglu is a player of real talent, but he still needs to adapt to Italian football and its tactics. He needs to play with more of a position and to attack the space, like Fabio Borini. I am convinced we’ll be able to tap his potential.

“The club deserves 10 out of 10 for the work on the transfer market. Every European club needs at least three or four transfer windows to get a complete team, but we’ve done it very quickly.”
