“After two Serie A defeats, the break for international duty felt even longer. We must have the strength to put those games behind us and focus on the next step, every time. The season starts now.

“We mustn’t be afraid, as there is the desire to do well. We’ll start with Sassuolo, it’s all about the single match. The Neroverdi have a strong core that has remained intact for several years.

Gasperini confirmed there will be significant squad rotation, because “nobody can play seven games in a row. Tomorrow we’ll definitely play Mattia Caldara, Marten de Roon, Timothy Castagne, Josip Ilicic and Andreas Cornelius.”

The tactician even went so far as to name his starting XI.

Atalanta: Berisha; Toloi, Caldara, Masiello; Castagne, De Roon, Cristante, Gosens; Ilicic; Gomez, Cornelius
