“A new season begins for us, with many lads who joined only after the break for international duty,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“Silvan Widmer is still unavailable, so Jens Stryger Larsen will play in his role, as he’s got the right pace. Unfortunately so many players were away, I’ll need a while to think about the line-up.

“I don’t think Seko Fofana will start, as he had a serious injury and needs time to find his fitness. He is a very important player for us and we need him at his best.”

Udinese sold Cyril Thereau to Fiorentina on transfer deadline day and brought in veteran Maxi Lopez from Torino.

“We have two centre-forwards with very different characteristics, so we’ll see. It’s positive that Maxi Lopez is already very familiar with Italian football.

“We must play to win against a difficult side like Genoa. They like to play the ball from the back, so we have to be on alert to know when to close them down and intercept, because they’ve got a lot of pace with dynamic wingers.”

Udinese have lost both their opening Serie A games against Chievo and Spal, so are propping up the table.

“It is a delicate time for us, but not a dramatic one,” insisted Del Neri. “We’ve already proved that we can play without Thereau. The transfer market was damaging to us, but fortunately it’s over and we can focus only on our football.”
