The former Inter, Milan, Juventus and Japan Coach sat down with Tuttosport to cast his eye over the current Serie A landscape.

“It will certainly be a harder-fought campaign than over the last few years, because the squad level of the most important clubs has increased,” said Zac.

“Almost all the teams in the top group have enough strength in depth for two line-ups. Juventus are still the club best suited to handling turbulence that everyone runs into during a season. They also signed players who are valid alternatives to the first choice picks.

“Last season, Maurizio Sarri’s Napoli paid a price for the difficult first half of their campaign, but if they build on what we saw in the second half of that term, then everyone ought to be worried.

“The only real limit for Napoli is that when things are going well and enthusiasm is running high, there is a sense of great unity, but in difficult moments – as we saw last year – some misunderstandings emerge between (President Aurelio) De Laurentiis and Sarri. That in turn disorients the team.

“I really like Inter. They have players who can change the balance of a game. Just look at what Mauro Icardi did to beat Roma at the Olimpico. He was extraordinary.

“It’s true that Inter are historically a bit of an unstable side and everything could change with a few negative results, but Luciano Spalletti is a well-travelled Coach. He knows what to do.”

Nobody has spent more on the transfer market than Milan, shelling out over €230m for 11 new players.

“The Rossoneri have one big advantage: unlike Juventus and Napoli, they are not expected to win the Scudetto, just finish in the top four. Just fourth place would be enough to satisfy the fans.

“Their transfer strategy does put some pressure on, but only enough to push for a Champions League spot, nothing more.

“As for Roma, Eusebio Di Francesco already knows the club, fans and media well thanks to his time there as a player. This will allow him a lot of leeway.

“How many teams have a midfield with Kevin Strootman, Daniele De Rossi and Radja Nainggolan? These are players who can change a game.

“I have a few doubts on Lazio’s defence, but they have a very reliable midfield. Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is exceptional and would’ve been my first choice on the transfer market this summer. Next year everyone will want him and Lazio can sell for €40-50m.

“Honestly, a player like that can be first choice at Real Madrid.”

Zaccheroni has a surprise candidate for the Champions League places.

“Torino could finish in the top four. I hope that doesn’t put too much pressure on my friend Sinisa Mihajlovic, but with each passing year, this side continues to grow.

“They’ve got Andrea Belotti, the centre-forward everyone desires, and interesting players who want to make up for previous poor experiences, like M’Baye Niang.”
