Montella is under serious pressure after losing two of his six Serie A games so far this season and there are reports he could face the axe imminently.

It could’ve all been very different, as La Repubblica newspaper claim that Montella was the prime candidate to replace Luciano Spalletti at the Olimpico.

If it had been up to James Pallotta’s advisor Franco Baldini, then L’Aeroplanino most probably would’ve been the man chosen.

However, new director of sport Monchi preferred ex-Sassuolo boss Eusebio Di Francesco.

It would’ve been a return to base for Montella, who was a player for the Giallorossi from 1999 to his retirement in 2009, albeit with some loan spells in the last two years at Fulham and Sampdoria.

He then became part of their staff as a youth team Coach before progressing to the main job from February to June 2011 as caretaker manager.
