Luigi Del Neri wants Italy’s players, coaches and fans to unite as one for the World Cup play-off return leg with Sweden.

The Azzurri were beaten 1-0 in last night’s first leg between the sides, leaving Giampiero Ventura’s team with an uphill battle in the race to reach Russia.

“We need to win, maybe by scoring more than one goal,” Udinese boss Del Neri said looking ahead to Monday’s return at the San Siro.

“The return game will be physical. Sweden are a tough team.

“They used the weapons they had available to them, they are aggressive players who battle.

“However, Italy have the characteristics to do better, even if the pressures are great.”

Del Neri expressed his sympathy for the criticism Ventura has received since the defeat.

“We are Coaches who go from having 20,000 fans to none in the space of an hour and a half, if results don’t come.

“Now, doing well is really difficult, you can’t just think about the technical side.

“I’ll just say that they will have to be united. It would be good for all of us to get to the World Cup.

“We all need to unite – players, fans and coaches in order to secure qualification for Russia.”
