Pipita only had surgery to stabilise a broken metatarsal/finger in his hand this week, but wants to be back on the pitch for the Scudetto showdown and is included in the squad.

“It would be crazy to run a risk like that,” said Mario Misasi, a Professor at the local Naples Cardarelli hospital.

“After an operation like that, playing a contact sport like football would be very risky. Higuain would play with the fear of getting hurt again and further limit his movements. Basically, he’d only be at 60 per cent.

“The worst part is that if he were to damage his hand again, it’d be much more serious and require a far longer lay-off.”

However, Doctor Leopoldo Caruso of the Pellegrini Hospital in Naples gave a different view of the situation.

“(Napoli full-back Christian) Maggio had a similar operation a few years ago and so he could well play. It’s possible in theory to build the protective glove with a lot of padding to allow him to play.”
