Cannavaro’s performances in Germany a decade ago also saw him become the first and only defender to ever be awarded the Ballon d’Or, although Italy will not be at the World Cup next summer.

“As an Italian, I’m sorry for Italian football. We have to start again,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“England, like France, have a good chance. It’s a tough competition and many top players will be there.
