The game turned when the referee flashed a yellow card to Felipe for hauling back Dzeko on the edge of the box, but after viewing the incident on VAR technology and confirming the lack of covering defenders, he judged it a clear goal-scoring opportunity and changed to a red.

The game turned when the referee flashed a yellow card to Felipe for hauling back Dzeko on the edge of the box, but after viewing the incident on VAR technology and confirming the lack of covering defenders, he judged it a clear goal-scoring opportunity and changed to a red.

It was all downhill from there, as Dzeko ended his seven-game goal drought with a great turn and strike on Stephan El Shaarawy’s assist.

Strootman then doubled the lead, firing into the roof of the net after an El Shaarawy back-heel flick, and Pellegrini enjoyed his debut Giallorossi strike with a header.

SPAL got their names on the scoresheet when Federico Viviani’s penalty was fingertipped on to the bar by Alisson, but the midfielder turned in the rebound.
