The tactician was sacked despite winning the Bundesliga title last season and Bayern chief Uli Hoeness confessed Ancelotti’s staff had repeatedly argued with the team doctors and fitness coaches.

“A lot has been said by the players, the Bayern President, the media. I don’t feel like going back over what happened,” Ancelotti told La Domenica Sportiva.

“It was a disagreement over our working methodology. I built my working method over many years and I won’t change it.

“Players take part in 60 games per year and my method is based on quality rather than quantity. Rather than be on the field for an hour and a half doing slow running, I prefer to stay there for an hour and focus on quick runs, working with the ball and replicating match situations.

“Football is not about slow running. I have been in football for a long time, it’s not like when I was playing and you did more athletic work, because that is damaging for players if they are in 60 games per season. You have to adapt and make the most of the time at your disposal.”

Ancelotti was asked if he had any advice for new Milan boss – and his former player – Gattuso.

“Coaches are there to blame when something doesn’t work. I will tell Gattuso one thing: it’s better to go down clinging to your ideas than to sink with the ideas of others.

“Whatever decision you make, if the club doesn’t protect you, then you are dead. If you drop a player, he goes to the club to complain and they back him, you’ll lose face with the other players. You can’t recover from that. According to the media, I was fired by Bayern because I had five big players against me!"
