Marco Giampaolo insists Sampdoria lost to Lazio with “heads held high” and keep their Europa League ambitions alive.

Duvan Zapata had given the Blucerchiati the lead with hopes of maintaining their perfect home record, but in the final 10 minutes Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Felipe Caicedo turned it around.

“I do think we lost with our heads held high,” the Coach told Mediaset Premium.

Lazio have scored 15 goals from set plays this season, so we know it is one of their strengths. There was a distraction on a situation we had already worked on, both on the first and second goal, where we didn’t push the line back up quickly enough.

“It was a game decided by incidents and my lads put in an extraordinary performance. The team was always in the thick of it and in the end Lazio were stronger physically.”

Was this defeat a big setback in Sampdoria’s hopes for European football?

“I think that if we are still up there, game after game, then we can take on a certain responsibility and not run away from that. We are focusing only on our own results and nobody else. We are fighting to defend sixth place, but the teams above us are at a whole other level.

“I can assure you that Lazio have nothing to envy the bigger clubs.”
