Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio insists there has been no contact from Real Madrid for Mauro Icardi but admits January signings are unlikely.

Speaking to Domenica Sportiva on Sunday after Inter’s 5-0 victory over Chievo, which moved them top of Serie A, Ausilio also reflected on next week’s crunch encounter between the Nerazzurri and Juventus and praised Andrea Ranocchia for his ‘excellent’ return over the weekend.

“It’s good being at the top, but I prefer to be realistic,” he explained.

“We have to stay focused, the road is still long. Everyone’s chasing us and things can change in a short time, but Inter want to stay up there.

“Juve-Inter decisive? Absolutely not, it can’t be the case in December. Like I’ve said, the road is still long. We’ll go to the Allianz to play a serious game.

“After that would we only evaluate the consequences of a possible victory. It’s never been a match like the others, even if there are always three points at stake.

“Higuain? We respect him, but we don’t fear him. Inter will be fired up. Pordenone in the Coppa? Their story is a beautiful one, but stories must end…

“Icardi to Madrid? There’s no need to convince him into staying at Inter, he has a long contract here and his will is very clear.

“He’s our captain and he wants to win with this shirt. All this goes beyond contracts and clauses.

“Madrid haven’t called us, but it would be their job to convince Mauro into abandoning a project like ours, in which he’s the leading light.

“Furthermore, the clause isn’t a problem. Icardi or Higuain? I’ll stick with Mauro. January signings?  We have clear ideas, but everyone’s a starter in this squad.

“No-one’s failed us. I’ll give the example of Ranocchia: [against Chievo], he played excellently, showing to have a lot of heart.

“Our strength is the group. Therefore in January, we don’t want to do any old business.

“This is a team that can only be improved with great champions, and I don’t see any of their kind available on the market.

“We’re strong at the moment and we want to move forward with our current squad.”
