Napoli have reportedly delayed Faouzi Ghoulam’s renewal, as they’re keen to avoid another Juan Camilo Zuniga situation.

The Algerian full-back is out of contract at the end of the season, and is still to put pen to paper on a new deal.

That has led to fears that he could leave on a free in the summer, but Gazzetta dello Sport reports that a deal had already been agreed, but then Ghoulam suffered a cruciate ligament injury.

That has led to fears that he could leave on a free in the summer, but Gazzetta dello Sport reports that a deal had already been agreed, but then Ghoulam suffered a cruciate ligament injury.

The defender and the club are thought to have verbally agreed a five-year contract worth €3.5m per season, with a €35m release clause for foreign clubs.

However, once Ghoulam was struck by injury, President Aurelio De Laurentiis temporarily took the offer off the table.

The Parenopei’s owner is keen to avoid another Zuniga situation, in which the Colombian signed a €4m per season renewal and then went under the knife for knee surgery – something the club opposed.

Zuniga is still under contract until June 30 this year, and despite not making a single appearance for Napoli in the past two seasons they’re still paying his wages.
