Former Fiorentina President Vittorio Cecchi Gori believes it is ‘risky’ to say the Viola will return to competing for major honours.

Stefano Pioli’s team are currently seventh in Serie A, already 13 points shy of a Champions League qualification place.

Cecchi Gori served as the Florence side’s President between 1993 and 2002, a time during which the Artemio Franchi outfit won two Coppa Italia trophies as well as a Supercoppa Italiana.

However, he admits football has moved on since his time in charge.

However, he admits football has moved on since his time in charge.

“I was born in Florence, it was another era when I was there and when I go back my heart always thumps,” the film producer told TMW Radio.

“I remember everything well. But now football is different, the mentality has changed.

“I don’t know [about Fiorentina’s chances of challenging for future honours]. I think it’s risky to say that but, given that hope is the last thing to die, I hope that destiny can return Fiorentina to a high level.”

Cecchi Gori then discussed Pioli, who is in his first season in charge of the Viola team.

“The Coach is a great boy, polite and a great friend – even though at times he has taken some criticism.

“I hope things go well for both him and for Fiorentina.”
