Torino got their first victory away to Lazio since 1993, but it all turned on controversial VAR decisions and Ciro Immobile’s red card.

It was an extremely fiery affair at the Stadio Olimpico, as the Aquile knew that a win would put them in joint fourth place with city rivals Roma – and both have a game in hand.

Andrea Belotti and Immobile both hit the upright in the first half, but the game changed just before the break.

Andrea Belotti and Immobile both hit the upright in the first half, but the game changed just before the break.

Immobile was furious that Lazio weren’t awarded a penalty for Iago Falque’s handling offence and took his protests too far by jerking his head towards Nicolas Burdisso as they went face-to-face.

The referee viewed the incident on VAR and opted for a straight red card, but did not give the spot-kick.

This sparked a livid response from the hosts, including Luis Alberto claiming in his half-time television interview that “some people don’t like Lazio being in the top four.”

Toro took advantage of the situation against 10 men, scoring through an Alex Berenguer angled drive and Tomas Rincon scorcher.

Luis Alberto still got 10-man Lazio back into it with a delightful lob, but Simone Edera curled a stunner from the edge of the box just three minutes after coming off the bench.

It’s the first Torino victory away to Lazio since November 1993 and ends their run of four consecutive stalemates.
