The bottom of the table club were the better team for long stretches at San Siro, but two headers from set plays in three minutes from Milan Skriniar and Ranocchia proved decisive.

“It was extremely difficult. Benevento play well and we knew it would be tough, but we pulled out our character and brought home these really fundamental points,” Ranocchia told Mediaset Premium.

“It’s important in these moments to stick together, rely on each other and pick up points.

“Hard work always pays off. This squad has a lot more work to do and a lot more to show. Now for the derby, we’re fired up.”

Ranocchia was also asked about the Benevento penalty shout for a coming together with Danilo Cataldi.

"I stood there, I didn't move even a little and he ran on to me. I couldn't disappear."
