Genoa ultras have announced they will not travel to San Siro for Sunday’s Serie A opener with Milan, as the city is in mourning.

At least 39 people are now confirmed dead with dozens more injured and missing after the collapse of the landmark Ponte Morandi bridge.

There have been calls to postpone the two matches involving clubs from the city affected by this tragedy, as Sampdoria host Fiorentina and Genoa travel to Milan on Sunday.

“After the latest catastrophe that has struck us, we mourn those who are no longer here and are worried for those who don’t have a home, consequently the future of a city that, even in its splendour, experiences serious difficulties,” read a statement from the Association of Genoa Ultras.

“We believe this has to come before a game of football, even if it is our beloved Grifone.

“While the gentlemen of football have not yet decided whether to postpone Milan-Genoa, we have already made our choice, without hesitation.

“Our city is in mourning and out of dignity, respect and pain, the Genoa fans will not attend the match planned for Sunday at the Stadio Meazza of San Siro.

“It doesn’t matter what the usual showbusiness people say. As far as we are concerned, silence and respect for our city, those who are no longer here and their families come before anything else.

“La Superba (nickname for the city of Genoa) is knocked down, but will rise once again. We are always at its side, so it can shine again, because we are its children.”
