Sampdoria fought back from a goal down to beat SPAL 2-1 and set up a Coppa Italia encounter with Milan in the Round of 16.

The Blucerchiati already beat SPAL by the same result in their Serie A meeting earlier this season.

Sergio Floccari gave the Spallini a surprise lead at Marassi after 35 minutes, controlling a Lorenzo Dickmann cross from close range.

Alberto Paloschi almost made it 2-0 moments later, denied by Rafael, and Gregoire Defrel equalised in first half stoppages on Jakub Jankto’s assist.

Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, the younger brother of Lazio midfielder Sergej, performed heroics in the second half on Dawid Kownacki and Jankto.

Samp eventually completed the comeback to lead with eight minutes left on the clock, as this time Milinkovic-Savic mistimed his intervention on the Riccardo Saponara cross and allowed Kownacki to turn in.

Milan will face Sampdoria in the Coppa Italia Round of 16 in January.
