Francesco Acerbi’s red card against Napoli this evening means the Lazio defender won’t be able to break Javier Zanetti’s appearance record.

The centre-back received a second booking at the Stadio San Paolo, meaning he will be suspended for next week’s clash with Juventus.

Above all, it means Acerbi will be forced to sit out a competitive match for the first time since October 18, 2015.

He played 148 in a row without leaving the pitch at any point, which includes 126 Serie A starts on the trot between Sassuolo and Lazio.

This would’ve been his 149th if he had seen it through to the final whistle.

Acerbi’s last missed match was Sassuolo’s 1-0 defeat to Empoli on October 4, 2015.

Zanetti played 162 competitive matches in a row for Inter and that record looks as if it’ll remain for a long time yet.

Acerbi’s achievement has nonetheless been extraordinary, especially as before that run began, he beat cancer twice.
