Sassuolo ended up making easy work of Bologna thanks to Francesco Caputo’s brace on his return to the starting XI, and De Zerbi was delighted with his side’s performance on Friday night.

“I’m really happy about everything, the performance and result,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We’re improving and we also want to do better than we did tonight, but it’s not fair that Sassuolo – with 10 points and one game less – were judged to be worse than a Bologna side with two points more. There’s too much concern about us.

“Bologna had many players missing, but we also have several out, particularly in defence.

“We’re on the right track towards being ourselves again. We were brave enough to press them high up the pitch and we were rewarded.

“We treat the defensive phase in the same way we treat the attacking one. After that, what makes the difference is desire not to concede a goal.”
