Atalanta director general Umberto Marino claims a refereeing decision “completely changed the game” in their 0-0 draw with Sampdoria.

Just before Ruslan Malinovskyi saw red for two bookable offences, Alex Ferrari was only shown a yellow card for his rugby tackle on Musa Barrow.

He seemed to be going clear on goal and it could have easily been interpreted as a goal-scoring opportunity.

Coach Gian Piero Gasperini was so angry at the incident that he did not go to the post-match media interviews.

“The coach was very close to the incident and therefore saw very clearly that the referee had got it wrong,” explained Marino in a press conference.

“The official should’ve been helped by his collaborators, because it was impossible not to see that Barrow was going on goal. That red card would’ve completely changed the game.

“It wasn’t even just the VAR, but the linesman should also have helped the referee with a better view of the situation. That is what the other officials are there for.

“We put in the performance against a Sampdoria side that was focused entirely on defending. They did well to limit us, but we still created several chances and dominated possession away from home. It wasn’t easy after the Manchester City draw midweek.

“We came here with the intention of taking three points and it’s just disappointing to see such a big refereeing mistake.”
