As expected, Serie B side Empoli have appointed Roberto Muzzi as their new coach after sacking Cristian Bucchi.

Although Bucchi was given his marching orders on Tuesday, his replacement was not confirmed until this morning.

It is a return for Muzzi, who had worked at the Stadio Castellani last season as assistant manager to Aurelio Andreazzoli.

The 48-year-old had followed Andreazzoli to Genoa, where the coach was fired on October 22, so had to first negotiate the termination of that contract.

This is the first major role for Muzzi, who previous worked as a coach at the Roma youth academy, then as assistant to Andrea Stramaccioni at both Panathinaikos and Sparta Prague.

As a player, he had spells at Roma, Cagliari, Udinese, Lazio and Torino before retiring at Padova in 2009.
