Thiago Motta believes Genoa “deserved to win” their 1-0 home defeat to Torino and explains why he dropped captain Domenico Criscito.

The Grifone rattled the woodwork twice at Marassi, but were undone by a Bremer header on a corner.

“Only one team deserved to win, for many reasons, and that was us,” said the coach in his press conference.

“It’s not just about how many chances we created, but how we created them. Football is like that, unfortunately, as we conceded on a corner. It’s an unfortunate defeat, but I remain convinced that with our style of football, we can achieve results.”

The fans are already starting to lose faith, as when the players went to salute the crowd after the final whistle, they were told to forget it.

“I saw extraordinary support during the game. Those who love Genoa bring their positivity to the group. It’s natural that nobody was happy with the final result, starting with the players.”

Thiago Motta surprised everyone by leaving Criscito on the bench, even after losing Cristian Zapata to injury.

“It was a technical decision. Mimmo had a good game against SPAL, but for me this was the right time to use Marko Pajac for the way he attacks the flank.

“There are still 72 points up for grabs this season, so it’s not like the campaign ends here. Trust me, I train these players every day and if I see anyone without the right commitment, I’ll leave him out. We’ve got to keep believing.

“We are on the right track.”
