Roberto De Zerbi believes Sassuolo “have everything it takes” to follow the Atalanta model and build a successful European club.

The Bergamo club reached the Champions League quarter-finals in their first ever entry, having eliminated Valencia 8-4 on aggregate, and are on track to finish in the Serie A top four again.

“Atalanta performed a masterpiece by improving their squad and their mentality. The credit goes to Gian Piero Gasperini,” De Zerbi told Sky Sport Italia.

“Sassuolo have everything it takes to follow in their footsteps. Clearly, it’s no mean feat, but in terms of economic strength, infrastructure and focus, we could do it.”

Serie A and European football are on lockdown during the coronavirus pandemic, so how is De Zerbi keeping his squad in shape?

“We speak every day and ensure the players are training. It’s tougher for some, for example foreign players whose families are abroad, so we make sure that they are looked after.

“It’s crucial that we don’t put personal interests first and instead focus on what is good for the country, even if it means sacrifices. I live near to the hospital, so I can see just how tragic the situation is.”
