Roma considered the €25m price-tag to be excessive for the 30-year-old, whose contract with Manchester United runs to June 2022.

According to Il Tempo newspaper, the Old Trafford side is now prepared to lower the asking price to €18-20m.

This would give the Giallorossi a much better chance of signing Smalling to a long-term deal.

He has made 28 competitive appearances for Roma this season, scoring two goals and providing one assist.
