Coach Moreno Longo insists Torino ‘were forced to take this approach’ in the defeat to Lazio. ‘We must fight, suffer and show resilience.’

The Granata had gone in front with an early Andrea Belotti penalty, but spent the rest of the match defending and were eventually overturned 2-1 by Ciro Immobile and Marco Parolo.

“I don’t like speaking in the heat of the moment, so I’ll discuss it with my players tomorrow morning,” Longo told Sky Sport Italia.

“I don’t like speaking in the heat of the moment, so I’ll discuss it with my players tomorrow morning,” Longo told Sky Sport Italia.

“I believe that Torino played with great spirit of sacrifice against a strong team like Lazio. Playing every three days, we were forced to take this approach. You need energy to press Lazio high up the pitch and we gave 110 per cent.

“The goals we conceded were avoidable because the defence was in position. Perhaps we could’ve had a positive result without a few errors.”

Torino are now in real danger of relegation and criticism is pouring in from the fans.

“We mustn’t let ourselves get swept up by what comes from the outside. We know the journey of a club that has to save its status. We must fight, suffer and show resilience when things go wrong.

“We’re going to need that over the next four rounds, as we’ll be up against three of the top clubs.”
