Although the 45-year-old doesn’t expect the Azzurri to win the European Championship, he believes it will be a useful tournament ahead of World Cup 2014.

“This Italy side is still a team in construction,” the Italian legend, scorer of 27 goals in 56 caps, stated on Wednesday.

“The European Championship will certainly give an identity to the national side and players need competitions like this to create a strong squad.”

Italy are hoping to impress after they arrived at World Cup 2010 as reigning champions, but they failed to get out of the group stage.
