‘Montella would be wrong to leave’

Again the message from Catania is that they are not prepared to lose Coach Vincenzo Montella to another club at the end of the season.

With Gli Elefanti sitting comfortably in eighth position in the table, Montella has been the subject of both intense praise and speculation in recent days, with the likes of Inter and Lazio reportedly coveting the former Roma striker.

However, following on from President Antonino Pulvirenti’s declarations yesterday, sporting director Pietro Lo Monaco has reiterated that Montella is staying with the Sicilians.

“Montella? His future is at Catania - he will not move from here,” resolutely stated Lo Monaco on Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.

“Vincenzo would be wrong to consider taking a different route - he needs to build the right experience.

“A Coach who has done just a year of work would be wrong to leave, just as a club with important objectives would be to take such a Coach into consideration.”

Lo Monaco, however, who has spent over a decade with Catania, refused to rule out his own departure this summer, as he is continually linked with the sporting director post at Fiorentina.

“I do not know if I will go or stay, I’m honest. If [Pantaleo] Corvino leaves Florence, it is obvious that Fiorentina will have to take on another manager and inevitably there will be some movement.”

Lo Monaco was speaking to the Naples-based radio station ahead of his team’s weekend visit to play Napoli.

“It will be a difficult game for both teams. Napoli are very strong, have some remarkable players that can change any moment of a game.

“We respect the Azzurri, but we are perfectly aware that we are a good team capable of putting anyone through trouble and worry. We’ll come to Naples to play our game, hoping to also get a result.”
