Philippe Mexes takes over from Thiago Silva in the Milan defence against Barcelona and admits “Leo Messi is hard enough to stop in a video game!”

Thiago Silva’s thigh injury rules him out for three to four weeks, so he is likely to miss both legs of the Champions League quarter-final.

“Losing a player like him is a heavy blow. He is suffering a great deal and unfortunately we now need to do without him, hopefully for as little as possible,” Mexes told Milan Channel.

“Barcelona are the best team in the world and we’ll do everything possible to progress, but sooner or later we had to face them. The quarter-finals will be entertaining games and we will fight to the end for every chance.

“It won’t be easy, of course. Messi is hard enough to stop in a video game! He is a great player and deserves all the respect in the world, but at the end of the day we’ll play the way we always do. We will try to stop him, as everyone in Spain has been failing to do. Here’s hoping!”
