Italian Under-21 international Federico Macheda has been ruled out for the rest of the season after picking up an ankle injury.

The 20-year-old striker has returned to the Manchester United medical staff for treatment, though he had joined Queens Park Rangers on loan in January.

The former Lazio youth product only made six appearances in all competition and got into trouble for criticising manager Mark Hughes on Twitter.
