The Spaniard moved to the Olimpico in the summer with the task of bringing a new philosophy to the Italian game.

Despite some inconsistent results, the club have continually backed their tactician and the fans, to some degree, are also showing patience.

“I don’t understand all of this enthusiasm for Luis Enrique that I see,” the former Roma playmaker, who spent 15 years at the club before his 1996 exit, told La Tribu del Calcio.

“He’s a serious Coach, very well prepared, but Roma already achieved what he wants to 20 years ago. We’ve already seen this film.

“The man who was really great was Nils Liedholm. He and Arrigo Sacchi brought zonal football to Italy which nobody used. That was skill.”

Roma are sixth in the table, seven points behind city rivals Lazio who are third and in the last remaining Champions League spot.
