Chinaglia was in hospital following that heart attack two days ago and was thought to be on the road to recovery, but suffered a relapse and died this afternoon.
He started his career at Swansea City in 1964, then Massese and Internapoli before hitting the big time with Lazio in 1969.
The striker stayed in Rome until 1976, scoring 98 goals in 209 games and winning their first ever Scudetto in 1974 as Capocannoniere with 24 goals.
Chinaglia ended his playing days at NY Cosmos from 1976 to 1983, then returned to Lazio as President for a couple of years.
He was known for his fiery character and was famously caught on camera insulting Italy Coach Ferruccio Valcareggi after a substitution in the 1974 World Cup.
Most recently, Chinaglia had trouble with the law over a failed take-over bid at Lazio that had some financial irregularities.
