Former Roma director Gian Paolo Montali was in favour of keeping Coach Vincenzo Montella at the club for 2011-12.

The ex-striker was handed control of the side in February last year before being replaced in the summer by Luis Enrique after the club were taken over by American owners.

“I asked Roma to give him a chance when we were looking for a Claudio Ranieri replacement,” Montali has noted.

“There are times when you need the courage to try new ideas and I think it was the correct decision.

“I advised Roma to keep hold of him for this season too, but a different solution was opted for.”

While the Spaniard arrived in Rome, Montella joined Catania and he’s enjoyed a splendid campaign to date.

He’s been so impressive that the transfer rumour mill is suggesting that he is being kept under observation by Napoli, Inter and even Lazio.
