I won’t quit, insists Luis Enrique

Luis Enrique says he has no intention of resigning as Roma boss after their heavy loss at Lecce. “I’m not embarrassed!”

The Giallorossi were 4-0 down to Lecce on Saturday until two late goals made the defeat look a little more respectable.

There were suggestions after the tie that Enrique would perhaps walk away, claims that he has rejected ahead of Wednesday’s tie against Udinese.

“The players are following me as they have done previously,” he declared on Tuesday. “The day when I am aware that they are no longer with me then you won’t see me here anymore.

“I’m not interested in these stories about my resignation. I won’t quit so you can stop asking me this question!”

Roma directors Franco Baldini and Walter Sabatini expressed some concern after the Via Del Mare reverse, but the Spaniard wouldn’t be drawn into a war of words.

“You in the media want to create a battle between myself and the directors, but I’m not interested in these things.

“When there is the need to talk with the directors then I will do that in private. I’m just thinking of improving the team.

“I’m not embarrassed by anything, I’m proud of my players for the way they train and also for the disappointment that I see in their faces when we lose a game.

“Nobody can say that this side won’t do some important things in the future. All of my players are doing well, they are growing and in the space of two or three years they can do really well – with whatever Coach.

“I take responsibility for things here, let’s leave the players in peace.

“How long did it take Johan Cruyff to win? How long Alex Ferguson? Every Coach has his own timing.”

Roma have lacked consistency this term as five wins and six defeats from their last 11 games testify. But they are still just seven points behind city rivals Lazio and the last Champions League spot.

“We’re sixth in the table. If we can play football at a good level for the next seven games then we can finish third. There is a possibility that we can do it and the players think the same.”
