Piermario Morosini’s girlfriend has written an open letter thanking everyone for their support after his tragic death.

The 25-year-old Livorno midfielder collapsed during the Serie B game in Pescara on Saturday and so far an autopsy has proved inconclusive.

His coffin was saluted by Livorno fans at the Stadio Picchi and Atalanta” data-scaytid=”32″>Atalanta supporters at the Stadio Atleti d’Italia, while it is lying in state in Bergamo ahead of the funeral.

“Mario adored playing in the rain, as he said the ball needed special treatment. He was playing in the rain when he died,” wrote his girlfriend Anna in an open letter.

“I am certain he was happy. The sport and that ball gave meaning to his life. Today this sun and this warm wind caress my face and all the faces of his dearest friends and family.

“We thank everyone for being close to us.”

Among those who paid their respects today are Inter players Javier Zanetti and Andrea Ranocchia.
