Fabio Borini has looked to quell controversy surrounding an episode he was involved in during Roma’s defeat to Fiorentina in midweek.

The young striker was accused by Roma’s fans in the Curva Sud of gesturing them to be silent as he and his teammates celebrated Francesco Totti’s equaliser in the eventual 2-1 defeat at the Olimpico to La Viola.

However, the former Chelsea man has expressed his sorrow in what he sees as a misinterpretation of his actions.

“My gesture was to encourage the fans and to say that we have and we still need to keep our heads up,” the 21-year-old told Roma Channel on Thursday.

“I didn’t want to silence anyone, no-one deserves to be silenced.

“Will there be a reaction against Napoli? The fans expect a lot given the recent results, this is normal, and we will do we can to our maximum.”

Borini has netted nine times in the League for the Giallorossi this season and could play a part against Napoli at the weekend, in light of Pablo Daniel Osvaldo’s suspension.
