Verratti surprised by Italy call

Marco Verratti is struggling to believe that he has a chance of going to Euro 2012. “Don’t wake me up if this is a dream.”

The 19-year-old was one of a number of surprise inclusions in Cesare Prandelli’s 32-man preliminary squad on Sunday.

Verratti, an Under-21 international, is uncapped at full level and only has experience of Serie B football with Pescara this term.

“I’m surprised, but very happy,” stated the teenager. “If this is a dream then I hope that I never wake up.

“I want to thank everyone who has believed in me and my family that always stayed close to me. I also thank Pescara for allowing me to grow as a footballer and a person.”

A number of Pescara players have caught the eye this season under 4-3-3 Czech tactician Zdenek Zeman.

“I thank all of my Coaches and Zeman has given me some excellent advice,” added the Juventus target. “I’m delighted, but I have my feet on the ground and I’ll continue to work hard to give my all.”
