Napoli captain Paolo Cannavaro lifted the Coppa Italia to the sky and declared “there won’t be any sleep in Naples tonight.”
The Partenopei had not won any silverware for 22 years, but beat Juventus 2-0 in Rome to secure the trophy.
“We had great fun in the locker room and tried to get out on to the pitch to bring the cup to the fans, but they had already gone,” he said of the chaotic pitch invasion that forced players back into the tunnel.
While the team was in the dressing room, Cannavaro and Christian Maggio ensured Marek Hamsik kept his promise by shaving off his famous Mohican hairstyle.
“Certainly there won’t be any sleep in Naples tonight. I hope this victory can be a starting point.
“We are a strong squad and perhaps the only thing we were lacking was that victory. We hope this success can help us build next season.”
