Worse than 2006, says De Rossi

Roma and Italy midfielder Daniele De Rossi is concerned by the developments in the betting match fixing probe. “It’s worse than 2006.”

Numerous players were arrested yesterday, while Italian international Domenico Criscito and Juventus boss Antonio Conte were placed under investigation.

Criscito’s room at Italy’s Coverciano training base in Florence was even searched by police at 6.30am yesterday morning.

“From my personal point of view, this is worse than 2006,” De Rossi stated. “Back then club directors were involved, now I’m seeing friends and teammates.

“We woke up yesterday to see police there and we instantly understood the seriousness of the situation.

“I don’t know what to think. I tried to put myself in the place of those involved and it won’t be easy for them.

“My biggest fear is that there is something horrible underneath all of this.”

While Criscito, subsequently dropped from Euro 2012, is just under investigation, Lazio and Italy midfielder Stefano Mauri was arrested.

“Mauri is not a delinquent by any means, he’s an excellent player as well as a good guy,” the Roman continued. “I really hope he comes out of this clean.”
