Swiss side Sion have confirmed “there is a meeting tomorrow” between Lazio and their Coach Vladimir Petkovic. “We won’t stand in their way.”

The Bosnian has shot to the top of the list for the vacant Stadio Olimpico post and could be announced within days.

“There is a meeting tomorrow between Petkovic and Lazio. If they were to reach an agreement, then we won’t stand in their way,” said director of sport Marco Degennaro on Radio Manà Manà.

“He has a contract, but it’s true that when a side like Lazio calls, it is difficult to keep hold of anyone.

“I’d love to see Petkovic work for a top club and I wish him all the best. It’s only right that we don’t get in his way when an opportunity like this arises, as it is the best thing for his career.

“Petkovic only arrived here 15 days ago and there are no problems releasing him. None of this has been translated to paper, as there are only handshakes between the President and the Coach.”

He would be a very new face to Serie A and the Sion director of sport described his character.

“Petkovic is a Coach with great charisma, is very well-prepared, meticulous and studies a lot to get ready for games.

“He is an excellent motivator and knows how to push the right buttons for his players. He has everything he needs to do well.

“He prefers attacking football and always uses the 3-4-3 with very forward-minded wingers. For example, Lazio’s Senad Lulic is a product of the Petkovic school.

“With so little time to work with Sion, he adapted to a 4-2-3-1 and still played good football. He started working as a professional Coach in 2006, but the public really got to know him two or three years ago.”

Petkovic arrived at Sion with the club in penultimate place in May due to a 36-point penalty for fielding ineligible players signed during a transfer embargo.

He saved them from relegation by winning the play-offs against Aarau, winning the first leg 3-0 and losing the return match 1-0.
